Bali, the most famous island in all of Indonesia filled with forested volcanic mountains, iconic rice paddies, breathtaking white beaches and coral reefs, the Island of the Gods has been an international favourite for decades. The allure of Bali comes mostly from its natural landscapes, the friendly Balinese people and their beautiful culture that are unlike anywhere else in the world. Everything began in the bustling town of Kuta, which was discovered as a surfing paradise. Back in the 1980’s, backpackers would talk about “the three K’s” – Kathmandu in Nepal, Kao San Road in Bangkok and Kuta.
Today Kuta still attracts some hardcore backpackers as well as families and tourists from all over the world. While Kuta may be a little too boisterous for some, there are many newer, quieter areas that would suit the needs of different travelers. For those who enjoy rugged cliffs and pounding waves, head to Uluwatu, Jimbaran and Balangan.
For a quiet and calm environment head to Sanur or Nusa Dua has gently lapping waves and sandy beaches. Ubud and Gianyar would satisfy even the most artistic souls as these are the centre of everything artistic and cultural in Bali, surrounded by lush green paddy fields, roaring rivers and thundering waterfalls.
If you want a bit of excitement, nightlife and some shopping, then Seminyak has it all. Be sure to also explore further out to Amed, Lovina, Bedugul and the three smaller islands of Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan for a holiday within a holiday.
